Salvo is located about 25 miles south of Oregon Inlet on Hatteras Island. Originally called Clarks, the town took on the name Salvo in 1901 when the first post office was established. Legend has it that the name came from a passing sailor during the civil war. The captain of the ship planned to attack the town but could not find a name for it on the map so he said “Give it a salvo anyway”. (Salvo means simultaneous cannon firing.) So the sailor did, he wrote the word “Salvo” on the map marker.

The Salvo post office was one of the smallest post offices in the United States. It was unfortunately destroyed by arson in 1992 but was rebuilt later that decade. The current post office now serves the towns Salvo, Waves and Rodanthe.

The town has changed a lot over the last two decades but still remains a small town with many of its locals either being fisherman or US Coast Guard. The locals are peaceful and friendly and will make you feel at home.
