Waves is the central town to the tri-village on Hatteras. Back during the Raleigh colonist era the area was just known as Rodanthe. But in the early 1900’s, Rodanthe was split into three separate towns: Rodanthe, Waves & Salvo. Much like Salvo, the town boasts many fisherman and crabbers who have lived in the town since birth.
Although the town is rich with history, it is also known for its water sports. Waves is the perfect spot for water sports because of the off-shore winds blowing from the Atlantic ocean across to the sound. The access to the sound is great for kiteboarding and windsurfing. Even if you don’t enjoy these sports, it is an awesome sight to watch!
Waves is close to the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge which is ideal for bird watchers and nature lovers alike. There are also many campgrounds in the area.
